If you google Leighton's name, the first entry is a letter he wrote to the Guardian, which reads as follows: "I notice in many newspaper articles these days a frequent use of the split infinitive. When I was at school this form was heavily frowned upon. Is this usage becoming more accepted, or is it just sloppiness on the parts of the journalists concerned? Leighton Cathcart, London UK" So very Leighton. He wouldn't stand for it! He was a gentleman and a scholar.
